Light. Eve. Soldiers. Fire. (2018)

Synopsis

After almost a year’s training and two public showcases, the directors from the 2017/18 Emerging Directors Lab closes with a quadruple bill of edgy original works — written and/or devised, and created from scratch. The bill includes:

The Light
After 10 years away and a bright career as a writer, Laina returns to Malaysia only to find that things are not what she had expected. Her childhood home lies buried in a landslide, her brother is confined in a psych ward and there’s something very off about the way everyone is acting that she can’t quite figure out. As her world collapses in on itself, she struggles to navigate this strange new world she finds herself in. Will she escape the maze of her fractured mind? And what secrets will come tumbling out? Does she know that when you gaze into the abyss, the abyss gazes back at you?

Project Eve
A series of vignettes about mothers and daughters, based on memories of the ensemble. Track their childhood to the present, touching on themes of hope, love, sacrifice, communication and identity. How is it that we come to see our mothers a certain way, and why?

Soldiers
Would you kill to survive?
Would you kill to save a friend?
Would you kill a child to survive?
Would you kill a child to save a friend?
Are your morals that important to you?
Are your morals that easy?
When confronted with an impossible choice, when faced with the ultimate consequence, are you willing to die for your beliefs? For a stranger you don’t know?
Would you kill your friend for your beliefs?
Two soldiers. One hostage. No way out. This is the story of two Soldiers.

Api, Jangan Lupa Api

There’s this woman. And she can talk to this voice. But the voice can’t see things. And then there’s a mask. But the mask is obviously a bit shy. And then there’s this whole existential bit about the universe and creation and isolation and purpose, and also the woman sleeps at one point. That’s it really. Oh! And there might be some light dancing too.
