‘Open Letter’

A travelling exhibition of works by Southeast Asian-born artists living in Australia, organised by Asialink, ‘Open Letter’, was hosted by Balai Seni Lukis Negara, with the support of the Australian High Commission KL. Two works, Vienna Parreno and Krzysztop’s collaborative pieces, ‘Self (Mark 1)’, ‘Self (Mark 2)’ and a panel from Parreno’s installation ‘Shelter(Fragments)’ were removed from the exhibition during the Malaysian leg of the tour, without the knowledge of the artists. Images from the censored works remained in the exhibition catalogue, which was available at the gallery. According to reports, Balai Seni Lukis apparently removed the works because they contained nudity.
