Rapper Namwee (Wee Chee Meng)’s ‘I Love My Country Negarakuku (Visit Malaysia 2007 Theme Song)’, which was upload on Youtube in July 2007, was accused of disrespecting the national anthem, being anti-government and racist. Wee, who was based in Taiwan at the time, explained in blog posts and to the press that the song was a satirical work and publicly apologized. In Aug 2007, the Home Ministry issued a gag order on all mainstream media from further raising the issue. In Aug 2008, when Wee returned to Malaysia, he was taken in for questioning under the Sedition Act. He was however, not prosecuted.
