According to the programme, Syed Ali first wrote “Going North” as a short story in 1949/50, which he later revised in 1955. He then adapted it as a radio play in 1959-60, which was broadcast on Radio Malaya. It was then produced as a TV drama in 1965 for Radio Televisyen Malaysia. In 1972, the TV script was translated into Malay and produced as “Menuju Utara”. The first theatrical staging of “Going North” was the Malay version produced by LIDRA at the University of Malaya in 1979.
