Lepas: Tetap Menari (2009)

<the red rose> is an intermedia piece combining dance and video projection, first performed in 2008, KNUA hall, Seoul. The piece intends to re-interpret a classical ballet “Le Specter de la Rose”, which was based on a poem by T. Gautier, choreographed by M. Fokine premiered in 1911. The original story is about a debutante who falls asleep after her first ball. She dreams that she is dancing with the rose that she had been holding in her hand. Her dreams ends when the rose escapes through the window. <the red rose> is an exploration of the following questions; how to create the 21st century version of the European 19th century’s Romanticism, particularly in related to a young woman’s romantic/sexual fantasy; how to use Asia traditional dance quality as a rich source to create the character ‘le specter de la rose’ which was meant for a classical ballet dancer; how the video projection can interplay with the stage, bringing a fantasy and a new environment for dance.
