Stepping Out! (2006)

Stepping Out! is an annual choreography performance event aims to identify, develop, educate and provide exposure to budding choreographers for Malaysia. For 2006, the National Arts Academy will present some of its student and graduates in Stepping Out! Through these efforts, ASWARA is committed to improving the standards of choreography and the professionalism in performing arts in the country. In recent times graduates of the ASWARA have received some degree of recognition as up-and-coming choreographers. The study program at ASWARA was the fertile soil that cultivated the above young talent and continues to do so with every intake of new students. They are given wings to hopefully take flight. Dance critic Through our other annual showcase called JAMU, ASWARA has risen to critical acclaim as setting the standards for contemporary dance choreography in Malaysia. ASWARA has received numerous Cameronian Arts Awards in various categories of lighting and costume design, choreography, ensemble performances and music. The art and craft of choreography has infinite possibilities – and we encourage the audience to develop their sense of appreciation for this genre of dance which does not always have the mass market appeal of say, musical theatre. However, contemporary dance has the exciting ability to raise questions in the minds of the audience and thereby encourage discussion and creativity.
