Since 2011, award winning novelist Faisal Tehrani (Dr Faizal Musa) has had seven of his works banned by Jakim, followed by formal Ministry of Home Affairs bans, beginning in 2014. They include the novel ‘Perempuan Nan Bercinta’ in 2014 on grounds that it would disrupt public order, under Section 7(1) Printing and Publishing Act 1984. In April 2015. the novel ‘Sebongkah Batu di Kuala Berang’, short story ‘Tiga Kali Seminggu’, a play, ‘Karbala’, and a collection of poems, ‘Ingin Jadi Nasrallah’ were also banned. In May 2016, a non-fiction work, ‘Sinema Spiritual: Dramaturgi dan Kritikan’, was banned. This year, a 7th book, ‘Aku ___ maka aku ada’ was banned. Dr Faizal has challenged the bans in court, with the final appeal still pending.
