Tembak Shots: “LAMU: Performance art by Donna Miranda”

When Filipina choreographer Donna Miranda of the Quezon City arts group Green Papaya Art projects first came to Malaysia, it was to develop dance vocabularies as the March-June 2007 resident choreographer of Rimbun Dahan’s residency programme for Southeast Asian and Australian choreographers. As part of her residency, Donna facilitated a workshop “Contemporary Dance for Every Body” and organised a dance-video-sound performance “Extended Periods of Waiting” at The Annexe, Central Market.

This time around, the lithe and congenial award-winning performer is interacting with more Malaysians — the large numbers who would have not even looked for information on her workshops and shows or, for that matter, any other arts events. Now here for the mobile public arts project of “Let Arts Move You” (LAMU), Donna is one of five regional artists who, together with six Malaysian artists, are creating artworks inside trains and stations of the KTM Komuter lines.

In this Tembak Shots, LAMU co-curator and Rumah Air Panas artist Yap Sau Bin together with Kakiseni track Donna as she does her bit to make the arts more relevant to especially folk from the other side of the tracks.

At a KTM Komuter train station in Kajang, Malaysia, Donna talks about how she engaged folks with photography and performance art in a train from KL Sentral to Seremban for the “Let Arts Move You” (LAMU) mobile public art project.

During Monday evening’s rush hour, yet another amused young couple kindly agree to be a part of Donna’s photo project.

“Let Arts Move You” (LAMU) started unofficially on Monday when Donna Miranda and Yap Sau Bin “harassed” stumped and amused passengers, and workers of the KTM Komuter trains. LAMU will be officially launched on 27th October 2007 at the KTM Intercity arrival hall at KL Sentral and will run until 4th November 2007.
