This is the largest international festival organised through the Dance Department ASWARA themed ‘Independence and Identity’. This biannual dance festival began in 1994 to launch ASK as it was then known and now coincides with the development and expansion plans of ASWARA. […] The standard of arts education in Malaysia needs to be on par with that of other international institutions. […] Through TARI 07, it is hoped that useful dialogue and exchange of knowledge can take place to further improve standards of teaching, research and performance.

The throbbing beats of knobbed Gongs not only provide the pulsating rhythms for indigenous ceremonies in Sabah but also acts as the main instrument for the Khadazan-Dusun’s Manugit ceremony, which is meant to placate the spirit of paddy when weeds are removed from paddy fields. The act of paying penalty (sogit) for trespassing the domains of the spirit of paddy in the form of Manugit is a form of spirit worship. Based on this important cultural and religious event, a contemporary dance piece entitled “Gong” is choreographed to explore indigenous movement vocabularies with the sounds of Gongs.
