Tell us about yourself. What inspired you to pick up the baton?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The sound of the large symphonic\norchestra: it was a love affair from the very first sight and sound. This was\nfrom when I sang as a six-year-old boy in a children’s choir in the Prague\nNational Theatre. I was absolutely fascinated and decided immediately that\nmusic had to be my future.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

You grew up in Prague, and served appointments with the Prague Symphony\nand Czech Philharmonic in the years following the Velvet Revolution. What was\nit like, living under the administration of playwright Vaclav Havel?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

After years of living a double life\n— one ‘official’, for the outside world; the other a real one, within a\nprivate, very small circle of family and close friends — the fact of sudden\nfreedom was a breathtaking experience. \nWe have been enjoying it ever since.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In 1994, you founded the Prague Philharmonia, a well-toured and\nwell-recorded ensemble. Any particularly memorable stories on the tour circuit?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The whole miracle of the existence\nof the Prague Philharmonia is one of my dearest and most precious musical\nachievements. Although, since 2005, I am honorary music director — and thus do\nnot have any active position with the orchestra — I still return to\nguest-conduct, and it is always a great joy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

You are now the BBC Symphony Orchestra’s Chief Conductor, and will\ncollaborate with the Malaysian Philharmonic Orchestra for this year’s Kuala\nLumpur BBC Proms. What about this series of performances are you looking\nforward to the most?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

I am looking forward to meeting\nagain the audiences of Kuala Lumpur. I have previously guest-conducted the\nMalaysian Philharmonic Orchestra, and I remember the houses’ vivid and joyous\nreactions to the music. Of course, I am proud to present one of London’s\ngreatest orchestras to Malaysian listeners in a rich variety of repertoire.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Have you ever tried ‘belacan’?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

I have never tried it, but as I know\nit is made from shrimps — and I like shrimps very much! — I’m looking forward\nto trying it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Who are some of your heroes, and why?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

My heroes, or those I most admire,\nare people who are excellent in their profession but retain the ability to be\nhuman beings, with compassion for others.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What’s immediately after Kuala Lumpur for you?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

A flight home, and a week of\ncollaboration with the Czech Philharmonic Orchestra.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Tell us a really, really bad conductor joke.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

I know only excellent conductor’s\njokes! This is one:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A blind rabbit encounters a blind\nsnake. They try to recognise each other. The snake starts to feel the rabbit\nand says: “You have nice warm fur, long ears, whiskers and four legs. Are\nyou a rabbit?”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“Yes, I am a rabbit!” says\nthe rabbit, who now starts to explore his counterpart: “You do not have\nany hands, you do not have any ears, you are slimy. Are you a conductor?”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What is irony to you?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Very often, insecure people use\nirony to solve a difficult situation. I do not like to use it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A really horrible Internet personality test determines that you are a\n1970s rock ensemble. Who would you be, and why?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

None of them!<\/p>\n\n\n\n
