DBKL initially rejected ICT’s performance permit application. An officer indicated that one reason was ICT’s political satire and director Jo Kukathas’ involvement in the V-Day Vagina Monologue. A gay character in the play also posed a problem. No official reason, however, was ever given. DBKL officers attended a preview and agreed to allow the production, with cuts to the show. The officers privately cited the fact that the play is “morally redeemed by the death of the main character at the end” as one reason the permit would be given. ICT agreed but used multi-media and other performative techniques to signal the act of censorship to the audience. DBKL officers, who attended the full run, later became “agitated at the demonstration of censorship”. (Source: Jo Kukathas)
