Gema Silapin explores two important Malay dance form – silat and zapin. Silat, a Malay martial art that uses intricate movement patterns inspired by flora and fauna. Zapin is popular as both a dance and music genre till the present day as a Malay pastime, especially in Johor, Gema Silapin, by the Faculty of Music and Performing Arts (UPSI) showcases silat and zapin in a creative choreography to stimulate and delight current audiences.

This segment highlights Silat as the main medium. Pahlawanku portrays the agility, softness, smoothness and courage in martial arts either in the fighting rings or during battles. This segment uses icons of the Malay heroes such as Hang Tuah and Hang Jebaat as well as their friends not forgetting the Malay heroines such as Tun Fatimah and Tun Teja. Silat movements are adapted into the choreography of this Malaysian contemporary dance.

This performance is divided into four sections. All four sections uses Zapin in Malaysia as the main medium. This segment depicts how Zapin in Malaysia constantly flows within its own dance structure despite the face that time evolves. In this particular piece, the movements in Zapin are explored and developed according to the trends of time. The music for this piece is composed by combining traditional music instruments with music technology.
